Covered with Love

Before the days of Jennifer and Brad and Jen and Ben and the shiny white vaccuous smiles of all those other movie-star hotties, long, long before Graydon Carter ever became an obsequious suck-up for the Hollywood machine, magazines like Vanity Fair actually had rich, luscious, delightful illustrations on their covers. Go take a trip down memory lane and check out the beautiful artwork of Condé Nast’s Classic Covers; revel in the beauty of magazine cover art, long before Julia Roberts ever had teeth.

The world would be a much better place if all magazine covers were illustrated! Peace on Earth and good art towards men!

    START A REVOLUTION!

…or, I guess you could jsut start a magazine and illustrate the covers.

There has never been anyone as great as Miguel Covarrubias. Al Hirschfeld’s line is superb but he couldn’t handle color the way MC did. Credit VF’s editor, Frank Crowninshield, for spotting and promoting talent such as MC and Paolo Garretto, and equally great photographers. Thanks to Patricia for the link and her great writing, as you say, Eliane.

    Vintage art covers by magazines

CondéNast Art: Covers by Magazine. A very nice collection of vintage illustration of magazine art covers. The Vogue session has lots of covers, but my favourite is the Vanity Fair covers – they are beautiful and cheerful. (via Drawn!)…
