ahhh yet another art center grad. I could almost call the techniques he used to create this and most of his work. They stem mainly from a class taught by Rob Clayton. Damn fun class. Maybe I will post up some of the techniques. They are very experimental and creativly freeing.

Nice work indeed, Autumn I am very interested in these techniques…. if you have the time to talk about it, please do.

Autumn, I would certainly appreciate that; as it stands, the Art Center is not in my future.

Since Autumn mentioned Rob Clayton, I reviewed some of his work on line. It seems very much to me that Mr. Clayton and also Mr Chang have work extremely influenced by Henry Darger’s works.

Henry Darger traced illustrations from catalogs for his compositions. So it’s cyclical, but the “look” of the Vivian girls preceeded Darger. The Claytons are hugely influenced by American folk art and they wear it on their sleeves; it’s a homage, not derivative. Changs work looks nothing like Darger, that’s a joke.

Finally, it’s kind of a subtle way of knocking someone, to ascribe the virtues of their work to “techniques” that they were simply taught… as if it were that simple.

Actually, I take it back. After viewing more new stuff on line, I see much of Chang’s work does bear the mark of the Clayton’s. Sorry.
