Dave Cooper’s painting process

cooperart.jpg

If you haven’t already subscribed to Dave Cooper’s Flickr stream, then you’re missing out on the treats he’s been posting in the last few days — The Making of BSFA ’08 documents various in-progress shots along with Dave’s commentary on a series of paintings for a 2008 exhibition at Billy Shire Fine Arts in LA.

I particularly enjoyed this quote:

i don’t understand the process at all. nearly every day i sit down and start applying paint like a mentally retarded barn painter. but after about half an hour of thinking, “well, it’s finally happened: i’m not an artist anymore”, things start to make sense, and i just know what to do, where/ how to do it. the middle stages are really the hardest though because you’re not making big sweeping decisions, and you’re not making fine adjustments. it’s a weird in-between stage where you’re often not quite sure what to do. and as this can last for weeks, it can make for a pretty jangly existence.
