Dave Curd

Dear Santa, I know I’m writing kind of early, but for Christmas this year I’d like to be able to ink like Dave Curd.

Really lovely stuff on his site. Makes me want to make similar stuff – except wanting to and being able to are very different.

nice work! i like his site too, the design is clean and even though it’s flash isn’t too cumbersome/slow.

dave IS awesome, and is awesome to work with . . . not just another pretty guache-on-pine-plank-mexican-wrestler-death-pallor-portraitist, but the complete package. speaks “good” (ish) english, answers his phone, labors in a speedy and Herculean way – I kind of want to have his children. But I can’t. I encourage you to, if possible! you won’t regret it.

Dave Curd is a Monster with Giant Teeth and Razors for eyes. He sleeps in your closet, and only comes out when he smells Ham.

Oops Johnny, it’s not all vector. I pull the lines in illustrator with custom brushes, then I pop’em over to photoshop for coloring. I’ve always wanted to use painter, but it lags for me when working on a 300 dpi document. Is this common?

Jacob, it’s true, I went to swosu for a bit. But it was mostly for the drinking, basketball, and unlimited lab hours. Art school Unreal Tournament lan party FTW! I bet you could put some real nice games on those shiney new Macs…

I don’t believe that is Dave. A merchant sailor told me that the real Dave carves his lines into elephant hide using sharks teeth. While both animals are still alive.

I believe SCAD has a class on that. The tricky part is getting the elephant into the ocean…

Good work dave! Even if you are a filthy vector whore.

Gee, I don’t know. I’m sad to say I don’t really dig his work. I mean, even when his inking is good and he has a good sense of colour, I believe he lacks drawing abilities. And don’t get me wrong, I understand that something needn’t be beautiful in order to be called art. For example I’m a great fan of Greg Simkins’ work; his illustrations are gross and disgusting, yet strong, professional and luring. He has a perfectly dominated technique and uses it to achieve what he wants, while Dave’s work is …hum, plain ugly and stiff.
