Douglas Jones’ portfolio seems geared to a mainstream corporate clientele but there are so many whiffs of vintage pop culture in it that I am really wondering what his sketchbooks contain. Or his bookshelves. I see bits of tattoos, Communist posters, classic wood engravings, folk art, Americana tourist attractions, advertising, and pre-war comic strips. He appears to have a real affinity for the 1930s. Unlike many of us, Douglas does not have a personal work section to his website (or does he have it somewhere else -?), although some of the portfolio pieces and his current home page image are probably non-commissioned. Maybe he’s just protecting his more straightlaced clients from whatever seethes beneath the surface. Or maybe the whole trend for showing off unfinished or experimental work on blogs and flickr is a tad, um, new, for those of us old enough to remember when nobody ever showed unpolished work or pieces which fell beyond the fence of what we were trying to market ourselves as. But I so enjoy seeing concept and process work and the wacky offshoots that I really hope Douglas gives it consideration. Inquiring minds wanna know where those chopped off wooden rabbits came from, darnit!
