Dronio

dronioI first stumbled upon Dronio’s work via his Flickr page. I’m not sure if Dronio is a tough punk boy with a penchant for cute yuppy boys, or vice versa, but his drawings tenderly reflect those two worlds colliding and intermingling. In his “Vero Amore Fiabesco” series, he is inspired by classic European fairy tales. Pictured at left is “Little Red Riding Hood.”

You can see more on his website, Studio Dronio, but you might find it a bit tricky to locate the tons of artwork he has on it. If anyone can translate a few key pieces of text for us, that would be mucho apreció!

Reminds me a little of Becky Cloonan. I’d be curious to see what else is on his site, but like you, I found it impossible to navigate. This is, of course, no fault of the site, but it’s clearly designed for Itallian speakers.

I would be interested to see a little more diversity of subject matter–though nicely executed, what I’ve seen so far are mostly what ammount to beefcake pin-ups. What else has he to offer?

Does he do comics? His style would be well suited to the medium.

A little more information (especially a word to the wise regarding his bloodier work) would have been a lot more helpful.

I’d really be glad to know where whatever it is your talking about happens to be, because i can’t make head nor tail of that site. I’m losing interest, anyway. It’s pretty repetitive stuff.

Hmm.. Luc joins Drawn and his third post is of boys playing tongue tango. Not wasting any time eh Luc?

So are we to expect more of a gay agenda from this site now that Mr Latulippe has joined the Drawn family?

I love cats and I love drawings of cats. So if I post something about cat illustrations, does that mean I have a cat agenda? Or every time I post about a female illustrator, does that mean I have a feminist agenda?

What an absolutely idiotic thing to say.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say idiotic ‘tricia, no need for hostility. I think it’s a legitimate question considering that the image Luc chose is *not even close* to the representation of Dronio’s best work.

Fellow cat lover eh? I like cats too but if most of your best works were of dogs, I would expect a post with one of those dog pieces to represent you. I wouldn’t expect a contributor at a site like Drawn to shove a cat in my face because they personally fancied cat nip.

That might lead one to believe someone has a bit of a ‘feline agenda’ and did not have the sharing of quality illustration art as a priority.

Thanks for his DeviantArt link Amanda, his “EmoPumpKing” piece is awesome.

Hay guys. I do not speak Italian (though the Japanese katakana on the main popup page reads “sutajio doronjiyo”, or “Studio Dronio”), but I figured out how to get to the art on dronio.com:

Click on “dronio” on the main popup – it’s beneath marcofelicioni and jacopocamagni.

There are four words on the bottom gray bar of the new popup – “Pubblicazioni”, “Progetti”, “Amici” and “Linkario”. Clink on any of the first three, and another string of words will pop up on the lowest light gray bar. Each of those are links to discrete projects and publications, and clicking on THEM will make lists of thumbnails appear in the main portion of the popup.

BTW, Semantica, if that IS your real name: Who cares if he has a gay agenda? If he posts good art, I want him on Drawn!. If the idea of two dudes necking freaks you out, just ignore his posts and go enjoy some wholesome hetero smut someplace.

The point I’m trying to make Semantica, is if you’re going to question if Luc has a ‘gay agenda’ then you may as well question if all of us contributors have agendas of some sort. We all come to this blog with different viewpoints, likes and dislikes. Each contributor is sharing what appeals to them, interestes them, amuses them, through their own eyes. The more different the viewpoints, the more interesting and diverse the subject matter. That is the beauty of this blog. And quite frankly, the person who comes across with a clear agenda is you. So yes, I agree with Max. You don’t like it, then move along.

As one of the principal draftsman of the Protocols of the Elders of Homo, I’d just like you to know that you’re absolutely right Semantica. Luc and Dronio are among our membership, and we’re starting with the public schools.

We also have an active “shove a cat in your face” program, which we’re spear heading as a part of our agressive pussy agenda.

But honestly, I’m feeling sorrier by the minute for giving you shit for your Hallmark post. I mean, this is getting rediculous.

I was going to comment on how his work isn’t very “tenderly” and that, for an Italian, his work looks awfully Americanish (I still like it), but I was side tracked in the comments.

Ok, news flash: Everybody who has a clean brush line, and uses flat color is not ripping off Tomer Hanuka. For instance: Yuko Shamizu is not ripping off Tomer Hanuka, Nathan Fox is not ripping off Tomer Hanuka. Becky Noonan is not ripping off Tomer Hanuka. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dronio’s never even SEEN Tomer Hanuka’s work.

And yes I also happen to work in this fashion.

You have to offer more than “look harder” if you want me to buy this comparison.

Dronio uses flat shapes of color, with little or no modelling. Sometimes the whole figure will be colored with flat or gradient shapes. The line drawing takes precedent over everything else and these are more or less colored drawings.

When Hanuka uses flat color he tends to model the forms, using the line as a kind of skeleton. There’s not a ton of line weight variation, and the lines are almost an outline to be colored in. Hanuka tends to model the figure like a painting.

Hanuka tends to rely a little more on observation than Dronio, while Dronio uses more of a vocabulary of symbols. the folds in the cloth are more like patterns of lines, while Hanuka is more concerned with how cloth actually looks.

That’s just off the top of my head. But I just don’t see it.

Oh, and it’s not clean brush and flat line. It’s clean brush line and flat color. Meaning, few spot spots, (if any) used to shade the figures. Sort of like a coloring book.

I appreciate this kind of work, boys kissing or not. It’s well crafted, with a great understanding of the human shape and the compositions are good as well. This can be debated all night long as it’s all up to who’s looking at the illustration to form their own opinions. Talk of some “agenda” sounds like some sort of supercilious, Fox News code-speak that masks what people really want to convey and is completely unneeded.
