Ed Emberley

Ed Emberly's Big Orange Drawing BookWhen I was a kid, I devoured every book on drawing and cartooning that my local library had on its shelves. Ed Emberley brings back a lot of memories. The books of his I remember most were Ed Emberley’s Great Thumbprint Drawing Book and Ed Emberley’s Big Orange Drawing Book. He teaches kids how to draw using basic lines and shapes, and his work is fun, fun, fun. His books were first published in the late 70′s and early 80′s, but they’re still being sold today, and Ed is still at it…

Does anyone know if this Ed Emberley merchandise is available anywhere other than Japan? What I wouldn’t give for one of those clocks!

I’m almost ashamed to admit it since they look so cool, but I must have missed these as I was growing up. Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do. Thanks for the link Johnny.

Unfortunately you’re not alone on this Jared, this is the first time I’ve heard the name Ed Emberley as well. And yes I also feel bad about it for some mysterious reason. These are absolutley beautiful books that I now must have. Thanks for the great post Johnny!

We love Ed Emberley at our house.

In fact my seven year-old daughter is in the process of bringing one book home each week from the school library. We are on Green this week, practicing our prata (potato) people and other wonderful creatures. For those of you not worried about the original bindings, these have been compiled into giant books.

I never saw his work growing up, but it’s so great. He sure knows how to work a thumbprint!

Check out this site for merchandise. They have some actual woodcuts too. It’s a gallery in Newburyport MA:

I don’t remember those books either – but I’m in love with them now. Kids in the classes I teach especially seem to get excited about the thumbprint one.

I have a 6 yr old niece, and a few years back I started thinking of things I could teach her as her uncle. (I have no kids and plan to keep it that way). I remember how much fun i had with Emberley’s books i would get from the library. So I searched the net and when I found them bought a stack of his different books. I stored them away for a time when she was ready for them, and since forgot. I think she’s at the perfect age…time to get them out.

I bought them from Amazon.com, and you can still find them there.

Re: Emberly merchandise, if memory serves correct they were specifically produced by a Japanese company called Hightide, so I think they would be difficult to find elsewhere. Hightide’s complete list of merchandise is here: http://www.rakuten.ne.jp/gold/htdd/ed.html

I only happened to learn of Emberly recently b/c someone brought me back some of the stationary items from their store.

Ed is great. I wish I checked out his stuff when I was first learning animation. His books are the greatest design reference. How to draw ships cars trucks and such are very useful. And as far as character design stuff…..what more inspiration do you need? He did a simple simon book in woodcuts. I was so impressed that most of my upper right arm is now tattooed with his artwork.

Ed’s an old Boston cartoonist. Our paths crossed many years ago several times on Boylston Street where many of us rented cheap digs. He deserves a tremendous amount of credit hanging in there with publishers who, in those days, offered paltry advances. More power to him and his son or daughter (I’m not sure which) is also a kid’s book author and/or illustrator.

It’s so funny that you posted this. I went on Amazon and bought 6 of the books I remember only two weeks ago in a fit of nostalgia and much needed inspiration. It’s funny that after all of the art I’ve been doing, once I remembered these and saw them, his books are maybe closer to what I do than anything else. Your site is great…

I remember those books, especially the thumbprint book.

There is one book from the 70′s (?) that illustrated how to make “characters” from numerals. It would show you how to convert the number 4 into a detective or something. Now, that book was inspirational. If anyone knows what in the world that book is, please tell me.

i too grew up with ed emberly. my brother and i (our sister was too young) used to pour over these books for hours, drawing dog-a-logs, cat-a-logs, and dragons, etc. i believe that the green, orange and purple books were our favorites, and contributed greatly to my own more mature work today (cough cough, mature. cough). today seems like a good day to draw faces on splotches and thumb prints.
