Fingerpainters of the World, Unite!

Those fingerpainters have organized! In the last 18 months or so, iPhone artists from all over the world have been happily creating and filling their Flickr pages with lots of amazing art. But  now they’re ready to get serious, and the result is the first annual conference of The International Association of Mobile Digital Artists.

The conference will be co-sponsored by NYU’s ITP program at the Tisch School of the Arts, and held October 22nd-Oct 25th. The con will be based on participation, so the organizers are aiming for an OpenSpace format.

For more information, check out the iAMDA web site.

  • That's enough, thank you

There does not need to be a conference for everything. Seriously. How do the conference coordinating companies keep concocting this cacophony of cash-grabbing craziness? And why do associations of every stripe even bother to associate with them? Surely, it is money. But, phew. Enough already.

This convention is not about making money, because it wont. But it is an opportunity for a virtual community of artists to meet and exchange views on this fascinating technological artistic development.

iamda was formed to facilitate this gathering of artists (it was not the other way around). This is a conference organized by iamda's membership and with the support of app developers. No one stands to profit from the event. There are no third party organizers. The conference is a gathering of artists who have been working together, forging relationships, networks and opportunities online for over two years now. Many of the artists in attendance have been featured in galleries together, but have never met, face to face. It is an opportunity for us all to really come together, meet and share ideas, experiences and future goals (both personal and professional). It will be a very precious gathering–built and supported through passion.

I am just trying out your new predictions platform.
This is interesting for Collective intelligence purposes and well done.
Could I have more background information on that project? Having worked at Yahoo!
Answers, Flickr and Community products out of Canada, I like to discover interesting projects like this.

    Hi Mia,

Sounds like a great event for artists. Are you looking for sponsorships.

  • Helene

This conference is the result of a community getting together to meet in person. We met on Flickr and have formed an purely spontaneous and voluntary artistic community. There is no charge and no profit and no third party. IAMDA is just artists coming together to meet and exchange ideas and techniques and excitement. The amazing thing is that we pulled it off out of pure enthusiasm and respect for each other's art.

  • That's enough, thank you

    Then I sit corrected.

So it is not about the money. It is only that money will help this become better.

So this is a meetup of sorts?
Well, that is radically different. I apologize for being wrong-headedly cynical.
That said, I'll go back to not posting for a while. I think I feel the vapors coming on.

Before I go…do allow the opportunity to demonstrate honest-to -gosh finger painting. Actually, I want to say I saw someone on Letterman once who painted portraits.

    I mean why not?

But, hey, I don't understand Photoshop conferences or all those other get togethers centered around users of common items. Well, Okay. I get Classic car owners, but, not people who upgrade common software and hardware getting together.

  • That's enough, thank you

On that last paragraph: it is out of order…in more ways than one. ha ha

I honestly don't understand every aspect of this finger (digital) painting. The very fact that there are visual ids for it…that's just too much for me. Potters don't have gatherings, do they? Oil painters? MacDraw Users? It just begs saying, “Yeah! Team Finger Painters!”

Where's Cap't Cupcake when you need him?

Sorry to be so harsh on this. I do digital art, too. But, I guess I'm not passionate about it.
