Flickr cracking down on drawings?

Earlier this week Boing Boing reported that some entries to the 700 Hoboes project were no longer showing up in a tag search, leading to some speculation that Flickr has been cracking down on non-photographic imagery.

Here’s Flickr’s response. Basically, they want to assert themselves as a site for sharing photographs, and any accounts that are extensively non-photographic in nature (ie illustrations) will be rendered NIPSA, or Not In Public Site Areas.

It’s important to note that this does not mean that the images are banned, but it does mean that if your account is rendered NIPSA, your images will not show up in searches or tag results, and this includes any legitimate photographs in your account as well. The 700 Hoboes project is getting around this by turning itself into a Flickr group, and not a public tag set.

This is too bad because Flickr is a fantastic platform for community art projects (do a search here on Drawn! for ‘flickr’ and you should find a good handful) and has evolved into a pretty powerful tool. But a word to those who do post illustrations to Flickr: be sure to use your account primarily for photographs in order to keep your images public.

Is there such a thing as Flikr that IS primarily for illustrations? If not, there should be.

Since yahoo bought flickr i doubt very much that we’d be able to get the source for flickr, or even look/feel. maybe a movable type install with tags and categories? mt probably wouldnt scale that large though.

i was worried about this last week when boingboing posted it, has ward been nipsa’d yet? his flickr is primarily art, no?

Up until this story I was happy with the concept of Flickr! Now that I need to look at alturnatives (I do not plan to post anything but my own illustrations, drawings, and scans of my work.) I remember reading about the following site on digg.com (Amazing because it was on the design tab the first day I was on the site.)

The site is subvarience. I have no experience posting on the site. (I created an account back in September but I did not have anything to post before now.) If you look at their mission statement they claim to be exactly what an illustration pure uploader might be looking for.

    http://www.subvariance.com/

I guess there is also deviant art if this site does not meet our needs.

Jordi, Your images are NIPSA. They do not show up when someone searches for the tags you have assigned. So unless someone knows exactly where to look for you, you are invisible on flickr.

Apparently, I’m NIPSA as well. Currently, out of my 328 images, 151 are true ‘photos.’ I don’t know what the criteria is for the percentage of photo:illustration, but I guess having over 50% non-photos is no good.

But you know what? I don’t really rely on Flickr and its inane search tags, anyway. I have a blog and a Flickr group where I get plenty of views, thankyouverymuch. I don’t really rely on the Flickr viewers to find me. Oh sure, it would be nice for me to have more viewers outside my usual circles, but I’m not going to cry a river over it all.

I think it’s narrow-minded for Flickr staff to say that they’re always to be photo-centric. I know that that’s why they started it in the first place, but times they are a’changin’ and Flickr might have to evolve if they want to keep in good with the public demands. Any smart company would tell you that. If you turn away people, that becomes a negative trait, and no one likes negativity.

    Ward,
Good point! The tag pool is overrated in my opinion. If I search the tag “maryblair”, I’m looking for the illustrator, not every dog, cat and pony who shares the name.

Beyond the marketing angle, I think they are most concerned about flickr being a secondary depository, rather than the primary place someone looks for for an image. They would rather an image be viewed via flickr, than linked from flickr to your web page.

That is, if you have illustration talent (or enough graphic arts know-how to want to scan illustrations by others), you can probably build your own web site to host them, and don’t really need flickr. You are not Flickrs sort of sheep, or the one they can sell ads when viewing your images. They also probably want to avoid copyright lawyers like the plague, despite fair use arguments.

You obviously have not seen such photos on Flickr like this. The quality is horrible. Plus, my artwork, like many other artists who do the same here, are done in the computer. Should I take a photo of my computer screen? Don’t think so.

They are not banning these images, it’s just that we ‘offenders’ are just not out there in the public searches when joe blow does a tag search on Flickr.

Like I said, no biggie, because I’m not a big fan of that tag search anyway. I do just fine without it.

My heart really sank when I saw this on boingboing. But again, the important thing to note is that drawings/illustrations aren’t being banned from flickr, they just simply won’t show up in flickr’s public areas. You have to do a plain vanilla search to find them rather than rely on flickr’s more creative devices, like clusters and so forth. And it’s still a cool social networking tool.

Still, it’s a shame. In terms of creativity, I already like the “old” flickr better.

(By the way, I’m a complete lurker here and have been enjoying reading Drawn! for months. Thanks for presenting such a great blog.)

I think Flickr sucks and I definitely will not be renewing my Pro account. The official interpretation of the word “photo” in the TOS is rediculous. The best way to vote is with ones money. Of course, setting up a hundred free accounts and filling them with crap photos and random tags is a good way to fight back too.

Too bad, because even in the midst of all this hubbub, I’m still a staunch Flickr supporter. It’s one of the best organized community-based sites out there and plus, they’ve taken me off the NIPSA list. They’ve got a good thing going on there, and it’s not worth it for me to get all up in their grill about it.

Flickr has been working very well for me. I’ve only uploaded illustrations, but use the Flickr Badge creator to generate galleries for my website and blog. I think Flickr is the best online gallery format available. I’m okay with not being searchable the rest of the benefits make up for that. Personally, I don’t blame them for wanting to be photos only. It could be worse, they could ban illustration work all together, but they don’t.

Well, I just found out today (no, didn’t get a form letter) that my account was NIPSAed. I was doing a tag search, and suddenly realized my account was no longer public, sadly. I have 3753 photos, and 51123 views on my photostream. Not sure what percentage of my stream is illustrations, but most of the photos of book jackets/covers are just that, photos, not scans. I have scads and scads of actual photographs.

I have been adding some more scans recently, and starting up some vintage ephemera/advertising groups. Hard to say if some individual complained, if someone thought my material was too racy, or whether my high-visibility group pools came to the attention of the flickr heads of state. Because of course, flickr can’t bother to send a form letter that says exactly why you were banned. Sigh…
