Earlier this week Boing Boing reported that some entries to the 700 Hoboes project were no longer showing up in a tag search, leading to some speculation that Flickr has been cracking down on non-photographic imagery.
Here’s Flickr’s response. Basically, they want to assert themselves as a site for sharing photographs, and any accounts that are extensively non-photographic in nature (ie illustrations) will be rendered NIPSA, or Not In Public Site Areas.
It’s important to note that this does not mean that the images are banned, but it does mean that if your account is rendered NIPSA, your images will not show up in searches or tag results, and this includes any legitimate photographs in your account as well. The 700 Hoboes project is getting around this by turning itself into a Flickr group, and not a public tag set.
This is too bad because Flickr is a fantastic platform for community art projects (do a search here on Drawn! for ‘flickr’ and you should find a good handful) and has evolved into a pretty powerful tool. But a word to those who do post illustrations to Flickr: be sure to use your account primarily for photographs in order to keep your images public.
