I have the English version on VHS, and I didn't even realize that it was probably the first anime I'd ever watched. It's really close to Hans Christian Andersen's original story, so much sadder than the Disney version. Once you watch it, you can never go back to Disney's version ever again. It's too good. There is an anime version of the little mermaid called Andersen Douwa Ningyo Hime in Japanese. I have the English version on VHS, and I didn’t even realize that it was probably the first anime I’d ever watched. It’s really close to Hans Christian Andersen’s original story, so much sadder than the Disney version. Once you watch it, you can never go back to Disney’s version ever again. It’s too good.
