Folded paper animation out of books

I cannot even begin to fathom how long this took. Created for the New Zealand Book Council by Andersen M Studio, this animated spot really does seem, literally and figuratively, to capture the act of using the imagination to turn the printed page into imagery.

It makes a fine companion piece to Scottish animator Eleanor Stewart’s Howdown from Rodeo, which also turns a book’s pages (here, a musical score) into cut-out stop motion.

It also reminds me of the delicate paper-folding art of Peter Callesen.

This looks amazing! I wonder if it’s actual paper or computer generated. Making that in stop-motion should took about hmmm… forever. But it looks like paper! Ahhhhhh! But that’s insane! I don’t even want to keep thinking about it, I’ll probably go insane myself.

Either way the final result is gorgeous!

It is interesting- Like to know how long did it take with how many people?

Good God! That was mesmerizing and intense! I can’t imagine the amount of time taken to make that if it was all by hand. I mean, the DETAIL, and it’s all so small. An amazing animation indeed!

Must be computer animated, cannot image anybody hand animating cut out letters walking away over the page at the end…
Apparently the makers claim otherwise: “The animation took 8 months to complete and is 100% handmade with a good old 10A scalpel blade.”

Amazing. It reminds me of the works of Yuken Teruya, especially his “Paper Forest”, “Lost and Found” and “Giving Tree” projects.
