Forgotten Classics Reprinted

The just-launched Barnacle Press site comprises dozens of vintage comic strips from the first half of the 20th Century. I don’t know where to begins, because this site is loaded with great stuff. In addition to stalwart classics like Milton Caniff’s Terry and the Pirates, and Harold Gray’s Little Orphan Annie, there are some rarer gems like Inside Woody Allen and The Outbursts of Everett True. All the strips were scanned by hand from sources ranging from reprint volumes (believed to be in the public domain) and microfilm newspapers. Be sure to browse these beautiful high-res Peter Arno scans.

Great link! I especially like the old editorial cartoons from both World Wars. Too bad the site doesn’thave any Windsor McKay.

Hey, first of all, I wanna thank Johnny for writin’ about us. We really appreciate it, and your kind words of introduction.

That goes for you commenters, too. Praise is the life’s blood of bloggers and web projects, and your kind remarks are tonic to our souls.

The site doesn’t have much Winsor McCay, ‘cos what we’ve got up is what I found in the library, from Hearst’s Chicago American newspaper. While I hope to retrieve more of these Chicago panels from the microfilm, in the meantime you should look into the series of “Early Winsor McCay” tpb’s from Checker.
