Gallardo

Gallardo Spain

GallardoI’ve had Miguel Gallardo bookmarked for several years now, but it took a Drawn! reader to remind me about him. (I guess I thought that surely Gallardo’s been mentioned here before, right?) I’ve been greatly influenced by the Spanish illustrator—his bold use of color, dynamic design and compostion, elegant use of line for his characters—it all comes together in a vibrant package that is worth a look.

(Thanks, Richard, for the reminder!)

I was just looking at the smaller image in the article and wondered if that style of art had a particular name? It reminds me of spot illustration from the 50s and early 60s, where you would have cartoony inks and rough linework, with blocks of background or fill color going “outside the lines”.

Wow what a surprise! Drawn rocks!
Gallardo it´s a multi-style master and a totem of spanish underground comic.
Try to see his ‘historietas’ from the 80´s: ‘Makoki’, ‘Buitre Buitaker’, ’0tan si , Otan no’… delinquents, fascists, aliens, hard drugs… LSD on comics!

And while we’re on a crazy Catalan comix headtrip, whatabout a mention for clearline master Max (Francesc Capdevila Gisbert)? He probably deserves his own reference on Drawn really (Ward? John?), rather than being a footnote to Sr Gallardo.

Max is best known in the US for ‘The Extended Dream of Mr.D’ but he’s an incredibly prolific comics auteur, as well as an accomplished editorial artist and kids’ book illustrator. I love his work and on visits to Barcelona I’ve found myself in a strange Head shop and at a rather bemused Christian Children’s book publishers in pursuit of Max books.

Going by the name of Max doesn’t do him any favours if you try and track down his work on the web but here are a few links worth following

Another master who I used to see around my neighborhood in BCN is Arnal Ballester. Unfortunately his site is still under construction:

Let me join the love-in (just as everyone’s left): Javier Olivares- I think your stuff’s great: Pamsa gave me a few of their Kids’ Mags (Tretze Vents?) when I descended on their offices and I really loved your Astre comic strips (whilst only understanding every other word)
