Gary Taxali

gary taxali Canadian illustrator Gary Taxali has a nice printmaking-meets-subversive style to his work, incorporating an odd assortment of disjointed cartoon characters with words and letterforms. He even uses the inside covers of old books as his canvas, further connecting the print world with the art world. I dig the gritty, handcrafted method to his style of work. A nice change from the digital aesthetic.

My office hired him to illustrate in one of our magazines. He did work for the cover and an interior story. I loved the work, but it surprised me to find out how small he works. The original pieces were about 5 inches by 5 inches! It was a pain getting them to blow up nicely to a full-page in a 10 x 12 magazine. I think he does a lot of block printing on found paper and books. That may be why he works so small.
