Genetic portraiture

Looking to commission a portrait of your family or pet, but want something a little unique? With a mere drop of saliva, you can create a genetic portrait — a framed digital image based on a sampling of your DNA.

UPDATE:
Eva points out two other companies that create similar prints: DNA 11, and DNA Artistry, both of which have much nicer websites than the one I linked above. Science meets art every day at Eva’s site: Easternblot.net.

There are actually several companies that do this. There’s also DNA11 http://dna11.com/ and DNA artistry http://www.dna-artistry.com/
I compared those two here: http://science.easternblot.net/?p=63

Ya know, I do a bit of this sort of thing for a living. My forte is analytical protein chemistry and not nucleic acids but I do run an occasional DNA gel. I have to wonder where this fella is doing this. Is he doing these runs on the side in a lab where he works? Is he sneaking reagents home to do it? If he is using Ethidium Bromide, a potent mutagen, to stain his gel then I hope he’s doing it in a regulated environment. Considering anyone could be trained in less than 30 minutes to run such a gel, it concerns me that someone might be creating a hazard in a residential setting.

These sites obviously just pirated DNA11s concept and idea. Geneportrait’s website looks retarded and they are not original and I would not trust them with anything. The other guys look smalltime too.

It seems DNA11 claims originality about the the concept of DNA Art. That is not true. Just as an example, check http://www.perfectdna.com. It dates back to 2002, 3 years before DNA11.
