I was very excited to get my hands on Gilded Lilies, by Jillian Tamaki, this week. When we first posted Jillian Tamaki’s stuff, I was blown away by the scope and originality of her work (now, she appears to have a healthy stable of mimics).

Montreal’s Conundrum Press has released the collection (124 pp, greyscale) of Tamaki’s sketches, editorial illustrations and early comics. The first comic, City of Champions, is a sort of fragmented paean to urban decay and a glimpse at the underbelly of Canadian culture (“Cold enough for ya?”).
Sometimes it seems like Jillian Tamaki can wrap her pencil around anything. With her guidance, distorted faces and hands become insights into individual beauty and character. The book is hugely inspiring – for me, it was probably the most exciting art-book since James Jean’s, Process Recess.
