Gimme Shelter: Carboard is for Boxes

Gimme Shelter is a charitable art project to help benefit the homeless population of the cities that the show visits. And while I’m not entirely sure how factual the site’s claims are that the world’s homeless find their primary source of warmth in cardboard, the effort to make a difference is notable:

The concept is simple – transform a piece of cardboard no larger than twelve inches on any side into a piece of art. The cardboard is a fitting medium for the cause since it is currently the primary source of warmth and shelter for our world’s homeless. We’re looking to change that.

If you’re able and willing, we’re looking for artists to contribute and for galleries (throughout the US, UK, Canada and Europe) who are willing to donate gallery space for a week. We’re trying to find a publisher to print a catalog of the works for sale at the shows and at the end of the “tour” the works will be auctioned via eBay. All proceeds from the shows, the books, and the auction will be distributed to non-denominational charities in each city visited.

It’s already been acknowledged on the Gimme Shelter site, but I just wanted to mention that the original concept came from This Side Up, which is opening in Minneapolis on the 12 of August. It just finished running at the Wootini Gallery in North Carolina.
The majority of the artists in This Side Up are members of the gigposters.com family (myself included).
The Gimme Shelter show has quite a diverse line-up of folks involved!

I’d be happy to help and will research more on this topic. If all artists could work together this impact would be huge. Take care from Tampa.

What I find more amazing is the implication that the majority of homeless are less than one foot tall. At least those little fellas will have some nice looking boxes to live in…

    I’m sorry. I couldn’t resist.

If I can come up with a worthy idea I’ll contribute a box to this.

Mike, I had that thought too. This is a great idea though.

It is an interesting idea. I was only able to pull off a few quick ones during my lunch hours—wish I had a little more time to work on them, but I kind of found out about Gimme Shelter a little late. Still it was fun.

I wonder if all of this artwork will actually be sold however.
