Gorillaz 3D

gorillaz 3-d

Creepy, 3D versions of Gorillaz performed live when they won best artist at the MTV Europe awards in Lisbon on November 3rd.

The Times of London reports that the illusion was achieved using an old Victorian parlour trick known as “Pepper’s Ghost”:

To make Pepper’s Ghost appear, someone offstage would be highlighted so that the light waves bounced off a piece of glass, strategically placed at an angle. The reflected image would appear to be onstage. It is the same principle used in fighter aircraft, where a ghostly image of graphic flight and radar data float before the pilot.

jesus that hurts my head trying to understand. those camera shots must have been choreographed to the animation so it never looked flat or skewed.
    amazing.

Oh, man. I caught that just by accident when it was on. Really was creepy. I thought, at first glance, that they were puppets until I saw them more closely. I didn’t think we had the technology for holograms, so I was just really baffled.

Of course, I still don’t really understand the “Pepper’s Ghost” trick, but at least I know I’m not crazy. ;o)

    Awesome!!

It seems like the Gorillaz are getting quite bored of being famous. Half way through the performance 2-d starts checking his cellphone for the time and at the end Noodle falls asleep? I don’t know how to feel about a ‘Feel Good Inc.’ band…they don’t seem to be very well.

Apparently, they’re going to continue to tweak this technology until they feel confident enough to use it on their 2007 World Tour. I swear, if Damon Albarn knew his side project’s tour would’ve cost more than every Blur tour combined, I don’t think he would’ve gone through with it (lucky for us, he didn’t know)!

I noticed the boredom as well. I wonder if they’ll be up for a tour?

The Haunted Mansion ride at the Disney theme parks uses Pepper Ghost. Very classic and very clever, particularly since it was available in the 1960′s!

Hehehe, i tihnk that “boredom” is part of the act. They’re cartoons, so they’re allowed to be weird right? But an awesome performance!

Totally amazing, I’m blown away! It is amazing thinking of how it was made, and more amazing on the way it turned out! Can’t wait to see the rest of the gang like that!

I though it was great, the characters did seem a bit down but amazing none the less.

Here’s a question that arose while reading about pepper ghost, to create the effect an actual physical object has to be illuminated and reflected onto a 45 degree angled glass for the illusion to happen but the characters are obviusly CGI, so how do you create the illusion without a physical object to reflect. And also if it was Pepper Ghost it would seem relativily unexpensive to do and from what I read before the budget for this is running right up there.

So if anybody has any comments or insights on this, please share

I agree fred… Mirrors my ass! They have to be clones guys. Don’t let them fool you. Dolly was no mirror.

oh… yeah your right about the CGI too… this can only mean they cloned the Gorillaz themselves with binary code. Fantastic technology! Computer geeks and biochemest finaly working together to create clony slave dealys.

I just hope Gates stays out of this. Am I right?

    To Fred:

In Pepper’s Ghost, the reflection on the glass from someone lit up off stage would be the equivalent projecting light from CGI directly onto the glass. What becomes confusing to me is that the light should also pass through and be somewhere off to the right or left of the stage…

I’d dabbled in Pepper’s Ghost years ago for a science project and this performance still has me baffled. I saw the same performance, albeit reversed images, on the Grammy Awards. Still, no better concept and there was close up shots too… View that here… http://music.yahoo.com/promo-25023071

I know the guy who has the patent on that technology. It is a true 3D Projector, meaning that, yes, they were holograms projected onto the stage. No mirror tricks and stuff.

Gorillaz aren’t holograms because holographic technology isn’t quite up to what we need. It is digital animation projected on special transparent foil in a way that appears holographic ….. FROM http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,13509-1856928,00.html
