Gruesomestein’s Monsters

I’m on a roll today, concrete-drilling be damned! Previously blogged Gruesomestein’s Monsters (the brainchild of pals Riccardo Durante and Mark Ackland… yes, I name-drop, so what?) now have all six GM shorts posted online and ready for viewing! Huzzah! (Check them out at YouTube in case that previous link gets bogged down)

It was such a treat to finally be able to watch all six GM episodes! Ric and Mark: You guys did a spectacular job, as did everyone who worked on the show to make it so great. You should all be very proud.

For readers who are not in the animation industry:
The hardest thing to do in this business is to actually be able to create something really great, from start to finish, AND to “get it out there” somehow. It’s virtually impossible, at least the way the current industry is structured in Canada. You would not believe how many great ideas never make it past just a few sketches. And the show concepts (some great, many horrible) that linger in “development hell” for months, or even years, and then end their lives boxed up in a studio’s storage area, (or the garbage) is almost tragic.

That’s why GM is such an achievement, especially for the people who developed it and got to work on it. It’s something that almost never happens. For some people in animation, it will never happen to them at all.

It’s a terrible shame that Nelvana passed on doing anything with Grueseomestein’s Monsters (besides that “voting” thing on YTV). Instead, they favor shows like BraceFace, or 6teen (no, I did NOT design that show, quit asking!). Whatever. Let’s hope the word-of-mouth power of the interweb will give the show the boost it needs.

And again guys: GREAT JOB. :)
