Gum Blondes

There is an apparent lack of traditional media in Toronto these days as Jason Kronenwald has taken to using chewing gum to forge his series of celebrity portraits. According to his site:

Each Gum Blonde is 100% chewed bubblegum on a plywood backing. No paint or dye is used. The colour is inherent to the gum – the mixing of the colour takes place in the mouth during chewing using an endless variety of flavours made by an endless variety of companies.

    Could be the licorice flavored “Black Jack” gum, Johnny. It’s actually pretty good, and as far as I know the first flavored chewing gum on the commercial market.

    So someone copies photos of Avril Lavigne among others with chewed gum? Stupid. On a par with writing your name in your own feces. Mental patient ‘art’. Maybe you can get Avril to pose with one! Or give it to her at a show- boy that would be AWESOME!1!!!111

    Jason’s work is quite good and unique. Its a different concept of having flavored chewing gum on a commercial. Quite impressive!

    It is true, but I believe he gets friends to do most of the chewing for him. No one mouth could take that much punishment (well…maybe some mouths could)
    Franklin, good to see open minded patrons of the arts are still among us. If he painted some landscapes in oil for you, would that ease your fragile sensibilities?

    Given the awfully defensive tone you’ve got there, I’m not sure it’s his fragile sensibilities we ought to worry about. But I’m sure oils would ease him.
