How Ted Slampyak creates an Annie strip

On his blog, cartoonist Ted Slampyak, the current artist behind the venerable Little Orphan Annie comic strip, shares his process for creating one of his dailies.

Drawing comics is as much a job as it is a calling — and on days when you don’t really hear that calling, it’s still a job. And for most cartoonists, it’s not a very good paying job. So it’s essential that you have a system in place, a streamlined and standardized way of going about the task.

He seems like a talented guy (his posters in particular are very nicely done), but it’s an impossible task. You just can’t sustain a decent continuity adventure strip three postage stamps at a time, even if you are very talented. I really think they need to retire Little Orphan Annie. This is so far removed from Harold Gray’s Annie it isn’t even funny.

I want to thank the folks at Drawn! for posting the link to my blog. Traffic has increased incredibly, and the reader comments have been positive, thoughtful and appreciated.

I’ll be doing more tutorials soon, including one on the color guides for Sunday comic strips, so be sure and tune in often.

    Thanks again!
