Hungu by Nicolas Brault

Hungu is an animated film by Nicolas Brault inspired by African rock paintings. The NFB (where I work) put it in the YouTube Screening Room as part of Black History Month. Already 360,000 views.

The animation is a combination of sand animation and digital 2D. Here’s a video where Brault describes the process. Pretty cool.

It was interesting. I liked his process a lot, and look forward to seeing more from him. As an African, I was expecting a little more from the narrative – something allegorical, perhaps – but I appreciated the abstract nature of the work in the end. His character design was also quite elegant (especially in how he played with dimension to turn the boy into a man).

art never can be animation but animation should carry some elements of art. After a long time was able to see an orginal work and it carried a lot of hardwork, research and patience from the artist. Great work !!!! man. From the charcter design to the storytelling method, it truely was amazing. The character reminds me of Indian Folk puppets which i used to see in my childhood with strings tied on to the joints. Your characters also moves their body parts likewise. The relationship with the mother and child is shown beautifully. Insted of using the bow and arrow to hunt, the character turns it into a piece of love…..it really moved me….
