If Saul Bass did the titles for Star Wars

Fun little Monday-morning-mixup of Saul Bass and Star Wars.

Who is Saul Bass?

Here’s a nice collection of his title sequences with some historical context.

That’s fabulous – i especially like the keyboard player from Jabba’s palace popping up on alongside the Sound Editing titles!

That “Hitchcock” font is nice for the Saul Bass website, but it doesn’t fit at all with what Bass normally used for his titles, which was Folio.

    Fun mix-up, though. Very cool.

That was fun… and ironic, since I was reading or talking with someone the other day about how Star Wars never had opening credits.

Digressing only slightly, who else has enjoyed the resurgence of real artistry and creativity in both opening credits and titles in quite a number of films recently? I remember when I saw Spider-Man that I was struck by how the titles told the entire story in summary – foreshadowed, really, adding to the cohesiveness of the entire experience. And, of course, what more can we say of ze titles of Ratatouille zat ‘ave not alreadee been said?

    :)

Super fun. And the movie doesn’t even have opening credits, so we can all pretend these are them.

If Saul Bass had done the Star Wars titles in the mid 1950′s it maybe, maybe would have resembled this only it would be competent.

If Saul Bass had done the Star Wars titles in 1977 then they would not have looked at all like this. They probably would have looked more like the beautiful titles he did for Martin Scorsese’s movies like Age of Innocence or Casino.

Oh, and credit where credit is due. It would have been Saul and his lovely wife Elaine’s titles for Star Wars.
