Invisibilia

The idea behind Invisibilia, replacing people in photographs with illustrations, may seem like the simplest of ideas, but the results are quite cool…

I really like that, especially the lo-fi tutorial. That whole website is really good, in fact. The random pics page is great: http://www.themanwhofellasleep.com/random_pic.htm

I laughed when i saw this post because as of late this style of illustration is what i’ve been seeing everywhere. Even this months Dwell had a quite a lovely section of photographs morphing into drawings.

Tacoma Howarth, yes, that Aha video is much like this work. And don’t we just love it! Many years have passed since, but that video still looks fabulous, just as do these pictures.

That’s still my all-time favourite video, too – the A-ha one.

This, though. Cool. I gotta try it out sometime.

Since its just tracing, you can shorten/automate the process even further. Select and copy the original image onto a separate layer, convert it to grayscale, use a find edges filter, select & delete or erase the lines that you don’t want. Now just noodle the image until you have the look that you want, flatten the file and you’re done.

Save this part of the workflow (Select and copy the original image onto a separate layer, convert it to grayscale, use a find edges filter) as an action, or whatever your program calls it. Now you can run the action on any image. The action takes care of most of the grunt work, leaving you to play with the image.

I once had a date who tried to chloroform me like that.

Thank God I ran out of money before she finished.

What’s cool about stuff like this is that it’s very much a product of the internet–here’s work the guy can’t really sell–the idea is just a little too slight for you to see it in print anywhere, but because of the internet, I don’t have to go anywhere or expend too much energy to see it. It’s just a click away from-well that’s kind of cool, and having access to all these little ideas always has the potential to inspire bigger ones.

Jed, you’re totally right. What’s great about the net is that there are ideas like this one, that aren’t really big enough to base an exhibition around, but make perfect sense in a web setting.
