Israeli Anti-Semitic Cartoon Contest

The story so far: Danish paper publishes cartoons that mock Muslims. An Iranian paper responds with a Holocaust cartoons contest. Now, a group of Israelis announce their own anti-Semitic cartoons contest. Amitai Sandy, the publisher of Tel-Aviv, Israel-based Dimona Comix, and founder of the contest jokes, “We’ll show the world we can do the best, sharpest, most offensive Jew hating cartoons ever published! No Iranian will beat us on our home turf!”

This is a refreshing response to all the cartoon-fueled anger in the news lately — fighting fire with humour.

That’s a perfect sentiment! Show how ridiculous setting things on fire and killing people based off of a cartoon is! If you can’t make fun of yourself, who can you make fun of!

Genius, I’d like to see if they come up with something better than what started this off (not too hard seeing how bland they were!) and also fighting fire with…. with humour, yeah…

Be quiet Johnny, you stole my line.

Sadly the people that would kill over a cartoon aren’t sophisticated enough to get the joke.

This will only add fuel to the fire.

I don’t get it. If it was a Danish newspaper why are they doing an anti-semetic cartoon contest instead of an anti-Danish?

A jew with a gun to my head made me say that, BTW. ;)

Seriously, this is f***d up, in so many, many ways. Without getting into the politics of all this, I do find one thing extremely interesting about it, from a completely objective point of view: Drawings are pretty damned powerful. And it would be nice if our clients recognized this. We’ve seen countless — absolutely COUNTLESS — photos covering this war, including atrocities committed by soldiers, and in the end it’s a cartoon that sets everyone off the deep end.

ps: this funny contest isn’t what I was commenting on, so much as the whole hoopa-joopa craziness going on because of that Danish cartoon.. But you know that. :)

Did I miss something? Why the jump directly to Godwin’s Law?
C’mon, there must be some cartoon fodder in Vikings and codfish.

I found the strangest thing about all this was, as someone else said, the sheer blandness of the cartoons. It’s very very childish…and scary.

This is Great! If Jews can laugh at themselves and can accept criticism, then maybe this will also mean the end of the censorship and even prosecution of holocaust revisionists, too!

Hope so. The outrage against the revisionists always seemed a bit overdone. The world is full of mistaken and even stupid theories. Let them all see the light of day, for their minute in the sun. Why so much fear over ideas?

  • Hmm

But if the Jews are making anti-semetic cartoons then it just adds fuel to the claim that the Holocaust never happened.

Sorry-this is going to backfire. The Iranians will quickly realize they have no sense of humor and can’t come up with a decent cartoon (how many ways can you draw “irrate”?).

They’ll get ahold of the Israeli cartoons, publish them without context or credit, have a good laugh and congratulate themselves for a job well done.

Ideas in themselves are harmless, what is harmful is when ideas mutate into a dogma, and from there into a justification for immoral acts such as genocide or terrorism. See how Marx’s ideas about a worker led state were appropriated, corrupted and dogmatised to justify the acts of Stalinism.

The unfortunate thing about ideas is that there aren’t enough to go around, and a vast majority of people do not have the inclination to form their own opinions, or apply critical thinking to ideas they are exposed to, this allows them to be led by other, more charismatic people who can use dogma as a leash, to direct their followers.
