James Jean interview

There’s a swell interview with Drawn! fave James Jean over at The Hundreds. Click on the “Chronicles” link on their top menu to get there. In it he talks about his process and how he has learned to straddle the fine line between traditional work and Photoshop, and how the Internet proved to be the key to the growth of his career — two subjects of interest to a lot of our visitors I bet.

James is one of my favorite artists working today… such a treat to read what he has to say. Fantastic find, John!

I just purchased and received Jean’s Process Recess a couple weeks ago. He’s a fantastic artist.

    Great interview!

The only bad thing about it was that The Hundreads really needs to hire an editor. So many type-os. ARG! Also, it’s not ‘yea,’ it’s ‘yeah.’

[...] James Jean’s art has a radiant quality. They appear almost incandescent, giving the illusion that they are lit from behind. His coloring is always very unique. It is rare that his color palette approaches anything realistic. Instead the colors convey a mood. They are soft and glowing and yet are very powerful and draw the viewer into them. James Jean is an artist whose work I stare at in awe. [...]

He looks like a little kid in that pic!

The best interview I’ve read with James Jean is from The Comics INterpreter #3 (he did the cover also). Every interview I read gives me insight into his work, but that one particularly seemed to crack the egg.
