Illustrator Ken Wong has posted a brief, but interesting, step-by-step guide to his digital painting technique, starting from the initial sketch.

I love his work…but I have to say this is beyond “basic” as a tutorial. I learned little about how he “laid the colors down”–there are 4 painted panels, not much difference between them, no mention of any specific filters, brushes, effects, lighting choices, how he found his palette, which palette he used, what he works with, etc. I’m not criticizing his end result at all, but it’s as much a mystery after reading it as before I started as to how he did it. Not what I’d call a true “step by step”.
But again–lovely illos.

yeah sorry DD, i never actually intended to make a tutorial out of it, or i would have saved more steps. what you see is just the result of saving backup files. i’ll quickly try and address your questions…
- i used a natural looking brush with some hue jitter. nothing fancy.
- no filters or effects – just a bunch of color adjustments.
- the palette was mostly in my head from the start, the rest came from experimentation.
- i use photoshop 7.
thanks for the link, drawn :).
