Kenney Mencher, how to paint in oils

howtooil.jpg

Art teacher Kenney Mencher offers up a few online tutorials for his oil-painting process. He presents this postage-stamp sized video tutorial in which he narrates his process over a sped-up recording of one of his paintings. But perhaps a little more informative (or at least easier on the eyes for those without magnifying glasses) is the well-documented step-by-step tutorial for the painting shown here. While the subject and obviously-staged nature of the painting don’t do anything for me, the information and lesson is invaluable to someone learning how to paint in oils.

I particularly love his custom-made glass table palette. If I was a full-time painter I’d make one for myself!

I have a glass palette as wel. Basically because it is so easy to clean. I use acrylics not oils. My palette is a large picture-frame and I use the glass to mix my paint on. When I’m done I just let the paint dry. After drying I just use a spray can for watering plants to moisten the entire plate. After a minute or so I scrape of all the paint with a plastering knife. Very easy, very quick.
