Kids books from 1920s Japan

japan1930.jpg

Visit this fascinating gallery of images from children’s books from Japan in the 1920s. It’s interesting to see a range of styles that I don’t associate with that time period simply because I haven’t been exposed to children’s books from that time period in Japan. I’m also surprised at how contemporary some of the images seem to loook.

I’ve gotten to the part where there’s what looks to be a book entirely done in sillouettes. Wow. This stuff is really ahead of its time.

The artwork is awesome! And so unexpected: some of the illustrations give the impression of having been made in the 50s or 60s, not the 20s.
