Kikuo Johnson

Kikuo Johnson

Lately, I often feel like there’s nothing new anymore, nothing left to discover, no new art, no new stories, no new places, and no new ideas, which serves to make me grumpy and slow down (or even altogether halt) any progress in my own work. But this single, lovely illustration by Kikuo Johnson just stops me in my tracks. His comics are fantastic too; “Thrustman” is wonderful. This is just what I needed today.

EDIT: I should add that it’s Jillian Tamaki (previously blogged) who told me about Kikuo. Thanks (again!) Jillian!

I couldn’t agree more. I saw this in Nick Mag and was immediately captivated. I love line and flat color, and this is a masterful use of the two. What a clever idea for an image!

I’m really glad you posted something about this guy. I looked up his site and I’m now going to order Night Fisher; he’s amazing. His comics are unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere. His drawings are incredible and the way he tells the story is so interesting.

Night Fisher is an excellent read, and beautifully and consistently drawn–he did it over the course of 2 years I think, and I think he was 27 when he finished. He deserves all the attention he’s getting!

Great art, reminds me of the Hernandez brothers and Charles Schulz, loved his site too; I like how interactive the images are when you move over them. Talented.
