May the Ralph Be With You

What better way to celebrate the release of the final Star Wars movie this week than with a look at the work of Ralph McQuarrie, the man who defined the look of that galaxy far, far away. Ralph’s site features paintings and drawings from the preproduction of all three of the original films, including this early design for Darth Vader. The images look like they’re scanned directly from the Art of Star Wars books, so there might not be much new here if you’re familiar with the books of his artwork. May the force be with you!

    A few years ago, recycling day fell on my birthday. As I walked to the train, I noticed someone had put all three volumes of The Art of Star Wars in with their paper recycling. I spent that train ride looking through the new additions to my library while humming “Happy Birthday To Me”…

    Art of Star Wars in the trash?! I shudder to even think of it! I got a copy of The Art of Star Wars when I was a kid and the book first came out. My best friend and I spent so much time poring over that book it came apart at the seams.
