Mondolithic Studios

Kenn Brown and Chris Wren are the powerhouse 3D illustrators behind Vancouver’s Mondolithic Studios, and were recently featured on CTV Vancouver’s “Where You Live” segment on Newshour. (See Goo-Tube video below)

I only wish the interviewer hadn’t taken such a light tone, both out of respect for Kenn and Chris’ talent and years of experience, and for the field of commercial art and illustration in general. The piece sounds a bit too “Hey! These boys love to draw stuff! Wow!” for my taste. (Note to CTV: Hire Chris and Kenn to redo your computer graphics, starting with the “Where You Live” intro.)

Mondolithic’s work is just stunning, and — being a big science geek myself — full of science-y goodness. They’ve also done tons of pre-production design work on a number of your favourite Sci-Fi and Fantasty shows (many of which are shot here). No wonder they’re in such high demand. Check out their blog too.

Man that announcer was annoying! I was embarassed for him when he started singing at the part where he mentions they did a cover for Rolling Stone. But this is pretty typical of local news, or any time anyone outside the arts covers the arts.

These guys are amazing at world building–making complex and coherant futuristic environments, but when it comes to putting people in those environments they fall short. Their figures look stiff, characterless and airbrushed, even when everything else in the picture is plausable and real. Their figures seem to represent people more than they actually seem like real people, but this is pretty consistant with their background in concept art.

Nothing to say about the art, but I really hate the fact that every news show from every station in the country looks exactly the same.

Agreed. Figures have always been our weakness and it is an area we are constantly pushing ourselves to improve.

Also, if anybody is interested…. we are in the process of rebuilding our site using Joomla and coppermine. The current gallery is only a fraction of the work but we should have the majority of our work uploaded in the next week or two.

We also have a mailing list/update that goes out every other Monday – an update of new projects with a brief on the context and client.

You can subscribe via the form on our frontpage.
