More Gustaf Tenggren

A while back we posted about the Internet’s lack of information about early Disney artist Gustaf Tenggren. The ASIFA Animation Archive blog to the rescue again! They recently posted some illustrations of Tenggren’s from a children’s book called Small Fry and the Winged Horse. Earlier they also posted his illustrations for a Little Golden Book entitled The Little Trapper.

Thanks for the link! We really appreciate your support.

I just put up an incredible book by animation pioneer, Bill Nolan. And I have two books illustrated by Edmund Dulac, a book adaptation of UPA’s “Story of Mankind”, and some jaw dropping images by Mexican illustrator Ernesto Cabral on the stack to scan. Lots of exciting things coming up.

    Thanks again

Years ago I was lucky enough to see some of Gustaf’s work at a gallery/library in my hometown Lancaster, OH. Needless to say I was blown away by the work and have been a fan ever since. .

Tenggren is said to have been the pupil of the Swedish artist John Bauer, who illustrated lots of children’s fairy tales. He’s well known and popular i Sweden for his way of depicting dark forests and fantastic creatures, especially troll.

I have two troll pictures by Tenggren on my website http://www.trollmoon.com dedicated to the Scandinavian troll in art and folklore – he was clearly very inspired by John Bauer, more than any other Scandinavian troll painter. You can check his pics here:

I’ll be writing a few pages about Gustaf Tenggren and his art in Swedish childrens comic book “Bamses äventyr” to be published early 2007.
Looking for some rare, maybe unpublished, sketches pencil artworks or anything rare or unusual from his hand. Preferrably from before his Disney days to illustrate it with.
The back cover will hopefully feature the image I have in my gallery at
    http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=9005
Anyone who knows where this watercolor has been published?
Also a question about copyright. If this work was published before 1923 is it in public domain?
Who owns the copyright if it isn’t in public domain?
    Any help is most welcome.
Feel free to drop me a line at: joakim.gunnarsson@egmont.se

[...] When we first posted about Gustaf Tenggren, there was little to nothing online representing his work. Since then, the A-HAA Blog has been spoiling us with many, many samples. [...]
