Mosaik covers

mosaik.jpgMosaik is a German comic book that was first published in 1955, featuring the work of cartoonist Hannes Hegen. It’s still in print, making it the longest-running German comic book still in publication, but from what I’ve seen online, its current incarnation, like most long-lived cartoon features, pales in comparison to the original. This Mosaik cover gallery shows some truly gorgeous work from the book’s early days. A brief warning, though: like many things from the time period, there are few racial stereotypes that may be seen as offensive today.

But they seem better drawn and better designed than Asterix. Where do you get ahold of these things? Has there been any effort to reprint them or translate them into English?

Great to see the stuff that I have grown up with being appreciated!
@Jed Alexander: I know that there are reprints for sale in Germany as paperbacks (publisher: “Buchverlag Junge Welt”) look for “Digedags”, that is the name of the main characters.

Some huge fans (like me) even started a Wiki on Mosaik:

A few (very few) episodes of Mosaik were translated into English, way back in the sixties and seventies.

    Cheers.
