Mutts shtatues? Yesh!

Over at the Arf Lovers blog, Craig Yoe has posted pictures, 3D turnarounds, and a video of the making-of process of some new statues of the characters from Patrick McDonnell’s comic strip Mutts, including some of Patrick’s concept sketches. The sculpts of Earl, Mooch, Shtinky Puddin’ and Guard Dog were created by Craig’s YOE! Studio, and they look awesome. Mutts is one of the greatest things on the comics pages today, and these look great.

I don’t understand the popularity of “Mutts.” I never have. I didn’t even think it was popular until I saw a number of “Mutts” collections at the Museum of Comic Art’s bookstore in San Francisco. I’m just curious about why people love this strip…

This isn’t an anti-pet thing, by the way. “Got Fuzzy” (incomprehensible without personal experience with and affection for pets) is “one of the greatest things on [my] comics pages.”

I love the strip because of the energetic organic artwork, as well as McDonnell’s continued appreciation for art from the past (which one always finds on his glorious Sunday pages).

I also love the warmth, the sincerity, the innocence of the strip. He uses very little dialogue, and yet says so much. The writing and ideas can be pure silliness one minute, and deeply moving the next. It’s multi-layered and utterly magnificent. If you don’t get it, well, that’s a shame.

Oh, and YESH! Craig Yoe’s 3D sculptures are awesome!

I’m guessing these statues are authorized. I’ve only just heard about them and think they are very cool. I checked the Mutts website briefly and didn’t see anything about them. But Craig is a well known guy and he wouldn’t do anything untoward, eh? I guess I’m just a worry-wart. Can I get an “Amen!”

Troy — the link to Mutts in our post links to a news story about the figurines on the official Mutts site. And if you check out all the photos on Craig’s site you’ll see a picture of Patrick McDonnell posing with the sculpts.

McDonnell is a rare bird, the strip has the atmoshere and appeal of Krazy Kat plus the animal activism of Outcault’s Buster Brown. It’s mice to see that he’s popular with the public as well as with his feillow cartoonists.

Craig Yoe is a very talented guy, publishes a lot of great stuff and he’s done a lot of these figurines, and done them all well.

I’m looking forward to owning some of these.

Troy–not to worry–what Johnny said! Patrick McDonnell, King Features everybody has been working together on this from the git-go. We’re all very excited about this, this is the first statues of this kind of the Mutts menagerie. The Mutts strip is sublime, gentle, heart-tugging without being cloying, the art is like it was done by a Zen Master.
Gosh, three artists, Johnny, Patricia, Arnold, whom I’m big fans of, say real nice things about me. I’m floating! Thanks, guys!

P.S. Alert for fellow fans of Patrick McDonnell: We have a whole chapter of unpublished surrreal comic strips by him in the book “Modern Arf” out now. And there’s a great cartoon by Patrick in the next “Arf” book, “Arf Museum” at the printer now. Details at http://arflovers.com

I have always had loved Mutts, but I thought I was weird until I started reading Krazy Kat and those art books started coming out about McDonnells work.
I love that his storylines and characters are so simple and yet so fully satisfying. I can see skipping by the subtlety of his work, not realising the beauty that lies within.
Although I like both Get Fuzzy and Mutts. I think theres space on this page for both…
Especially since so much else in the comics section does not deserve the space it’s been given these days.
I’m excited to see some quality merchandise being produced… I just doubt I’ll be able to afford it.

There’s a great book co-authored by McDonnell , along with Karen O’Connell and Georgia Riley de Havenon, from 1986, “Krazy Kat The Comic Art Of George Herriman”. I also like both Mutts and Get Fuzzy…

Mutts is great. I’ve only bought one current comic strip book in recent years (not counting the Peanuts collections) and it was a Mutts book – the sundays collection.

Of course, if there was an Arlo & Janis book, I’d be all over that too.

I have a cat and a bird. Mutt’s cartoon is so funny, because it really opens up our minds to what our pets would say if they could and let us know how we feel. My cat and cockatiel, I think are actually friends and are glad each other are there for company when I’m at work or out of the house. I come home and they are together. Patrick really knows how to get to the inside of a pet lovers heart. We see our pets attitude come out in the strip and see that the owners of the animals feel the same as we do.
