Net Hat Co.

Net Hat Co. is a showcase of animation work (seemingly both student and professional) by CalArts students (grads?) Devin Roth, JG Quintel, Erik Fountain, Sam Marin, Bert Youn, Joe Pitt, and Alex Hirsch. It’s Alex Hirsch’s three hilarious shorts that make the site totally worth the visit: Imaginary Friend (featuring Billy West’s fabulous Nixon impression), Cuddle Bee Hugs n’ Such, and On a Roll — all of which made me laugh out loud.

Okay, enough is enough. I think 99% of what I see from CalArts has this ‘aint I a cute hipster?’ vibe to it that I can’t stand. Especially after I see so much great animation off drawn! that ISN’T made by brats who pay 90k to get an education, it makes me think they need to reevaluate their grading system. Can I get a woot woot here?

Yeah, I hate those CalArts brats! Who do they think they are anyway? “Spending money to get an education”—the very idea! I think everyone who ever went to CalArts should be packed into a rocket and jettisoned into the sun, and that includes smug hipsters like John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Tim Burton, Brad Bird, Henry Selick, Genndy Tartakovsky, Craig McCracken, and PeeWee Herman. To heck with all of them, I say!

But on another subject…John! Thank you so much for linking to my work, and in particular, to my amazing friends at NetHatCo. I check Drawn! blogs nearly every day, and am greatly honored to be considered even mentionworthy on this fine web forum. Everyone at CalArts puts massive amounts of time and care into our work, and its very validating to have an audience, particularly when its composed of artists whos work we admire and respect.

    Thanks again!

What is sad is that CalArts doesn’t showcase this material on their own web page.

Hey dimples, you can see films from the last two CalArts Producer’s Shows at:

    http://film.calarts.edu/main/streaming/2005/charanim.html

    and:

    http://film.calarts.edu/main/streaming/2004/charanim.html

The most recent 2006 six show will be up eventually, but CalArts takes FOREVER to update their site. To pass the time, I suggest purchasing a “Mobius Strip” and trying to see if you can find the end. I guarantee that by the time you do, CalArts will have updated! Also, by then our president will be Gary Coleman, cars will be powered by a thimble-full of Kool-Aid, and Drawn! will feature the work of the great master Thomas Kinkade, painter of light.

The existential ending of “On a Roll” is brilliant. What took Jean-Paul Sartre almost 900 pages to do in “Being and Nothingness,” Hirsch managed to accomplish with a three minute animation.

    Kudos on such Amazing work.

BTW, so are they using flash combined with After Effects? Or just flash alone?

    Let’s see.

Getting robbed 100k or spend 8 bucks on Preston’s Blair Cartoon Animation.

These guys from calarts don’t even have the basics down. They create wishy washy art year in year out.

Name dropping won’t help your cartoons get better either.

    Ask John K.

Mr JewUnit, I bow to your superior knowledge. Obviously after reading several of John Kricfalusis blog postings, you have become a wise, all-powerful animation master, with an eye soo keen that you can see right through our hollow and transparent attempts at animation. Please, sir, I beseech you! SHOW ME YOUR FILMS, so that I may see the light and learn how animation is supposed to be done! I will shave my head, wear a robe, carry a wooden spoon and follow you, monk-like, as you lead me and my naive friends into a glorious future of animated glory.

Please! I cant spend another minute toiling in ignorance! Send me a link THIS MOMENT to some of your beautiful animation, and I will come to understand the error of my ways!

    Your humble servant,

    Alex Hirsch

    Hey Alex & Drawn-
Thanks for that link. Those animations are great man. I am currently a student at AnimationMentor.com and I would love to be able to produce quality work like that. I’m actually trying to get some flash animation done soon too. Alex do you draw it all in Flash first and then place the symbols over it? You have some great Flash technique there. Excellent job. Very very very inspiring stuff, and Jew Unit, you don’t know what you are talking about dude. CalArts is a great school and they only produce amazing work.

Yes Alex is quite the animator and quite a guy. Interesting fact for all you Hirschian fans out there . Alex animates only with a mouse. I don’t know how the guy does it. And the Net Hat Co. is very pleased to have him as well. And I would like to thank John for adding our little group to Drawn! thanks so much for that. I check it everyday for my inspiration and to all you CalArts haters….. get something better to do than put down other people’s work. Get off your seat, out of your mom’s basement and learn a little about animation before you hate on us ok. It makes the community a better place without your oppinions. Thanks.

O Hail to the great animators!! You have renewed my faith in man and beastiality, etc. with your great works o’ art. I beseech thee o’ Alex R Hirsch, to bestow a call to your lowly male parental unit at least once a decade. And yes your decade is up pal! I am both pleased and proud to promote (all)your great works of animation and will continue to spread the word (and boast) to the world at large. I will happily seek out and insert tubes (and catheters) in every hole of those who cannot understand and support the greatness of this site and its collective work!!!
Oh and MRJEWUNIT, we know were you live. You may now pull your head out of the anal darkness and see the light!
