So I’m cruising CBC to take a break from doing up my very late taxes, and telling myself to stay away from Drawn so I don’t get sidetracked, and what do I see? 2008 Doug Wright Awards has begun a new award called the “The Pigskin Peters Annual Award for Non-Narrative Canadian Cartooning (PPAANNCC)” [hey, why does that almost spell PANIC?] – and JOHN MARTZ has been nominated for his Excelsior 1968, which is described on his website as “78 pages, B&W, 8.5†x 5.5â€; The entire student body of my mother’s 1968 high school yearbook, over 1,000 people, redrawn as cartoons”. You can see it at his flickr site.
Of course, I rushed right over to Drawn expecting to see something about it, but no! John, are you too modest to tell us yourself? Or am I giving away secrets? I figure if it’s on CBC it’s fair game.
Nominated for the Doug Wright are some other excellent artists, including Julie Doucet, who I am surprised hasn’t already got a DW… or maybe she does…I better look that up. The judges, according to CBC, include Chester Brown, Seth, Canadian director Jerry Ciccoritti, comics historian Jeet Heer and writer and blogger Bryan Munn.
Darn, sidetracked again!
