Overlooked New York

Overlooked New York is a collection of “portraits and interviews with ardent New Yorkers about their joyous obsessions.” The illustrations are the work of Zina Saunders, and are simply beautiful. Shown here is Zereena, a 62-year-old contestant in a curry competition. Other categories of New Yorkers include kite flyers, street performers, bike messengers, and “rooftop pigeon guys”.

This is one of the coolest projects going on out there everyone. Go check it out. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone bring this level of love and caring to their subjects. A truly inspiring project that makes me want to be a better artist and human being. Zina’s work is a wonderful treasure. Don’t miss it.

    Thanks Martin, you’re right,

    But, you know, Tomatoe, Tomato?

Either way, the project is an absolute testament to the lifeblood of a city. A loving tribute to human beings that rarely get noticed by anyone in a fast moving city.

With all that New York has been through in the last five years this project pleads to be a published BOOK of some sort.

If there are any publishers out there, go check it out before some other dude buys the rights.

Yeah, hey, this work is really fine. Zina (pronounced “Zye-nah”) is amazingly productive. She turns one of these out a day, give or take!

So why ISN’T “Overlooked” a book yet? Or maybe it is? Anybody know what plans might be in the works? The only downside would be that the the gallery seems to be constantly expanding

The passion these people have is precious! Zina is so gifted at painting them. I’m a native New Yorker and part of what makes this city so great is the never-ending variety of the people here. I love how Zina gives each of them their fifteen minutes of fame.

These portraits about the unsung people who make cities like New York what they truly are amazing.
So, I don’t know which is more important; Zina’s wonderful and witty art or her chronicling a world we are too busy to notice.
I think she has achieved these two things simultaneously.
    Well done.

Anyone who loves New York will love “Overlooked New York.” I hope that these wonderful people and their stories will make it into the pages of a book so that readers will be able to take these new friends with us wherever we go. And what a great holiday present a book like this would make — for New Yorkers and visitors alike!

I think what makes Overlooked New York great is not just the art work but the way the story of each individual is written. Each person profiled is treated with respect and dignity. It would be very easy to create a website like this in a tongue’n cheek fashion, but it takes true talent to create such a loving and humane portrait of each of these individuals.

Many of us are fans of Zina’s Overlooked New Yorkers.

It should be in book format.

Or, it should be a weekly feature somewhere like The New Yorker. (Or do they only care about Overexposed New Yorkers and Filthy Rich New Yorkers?)

This is indeed a project that crys out for the coffeetable book treatment. It bugs me that so much crap is published, and stuff like this goes unnoticed.

Attractive images. Does anyone know what her process is? It looks like maybe she enters their photos into a computer, enlarges the heads in P’shop, and then traces everything on a Wacom. Or…?
