The new Perry Bible Fellowship hardcover book is generating a lot of buzz after crashing into Amazon’s best-seller list before it was even released.
10 Zen Monkeys is running an interview with Fellowship-creator, Nicholas Gurewitch, about the transition from webcomic to print:
“I think people respond to a packaged volume of comics much more than they connect with a computer screen,” Gurewitch speculates about the response. “Seeing it on someone’s coffee table, or seeing it in someone’s hands, or on a high shelf, can affect us in ways far more grand than seeing it bookmarked on someone’s computer.”
The Perry Bible Fellowship (previously on Drawn) originated in the Syracuse University newspaper The Daily Orange and has been running as a successful webcomic since 2001.
This seems to put to rest the controversy about whether a book can be successful if it’s available for free on the web.
