Peurs de Noir (Fear of the Dark)

This film just played in Montreal at the Fantasia Film Festival. I couldn’t make the screening, but everyone’s buzzing about how good it was.

It’s a collection of creepy, black & white animated shorts by prominent comic book artists and animators (including Charles Burns).

Frames Per Second has a good write-up of the film here.

Dread Central also has a very positive review here.

Out on DVD later this year.

Richard Mcguire is in the mix as well. You can check out snippets of it at his website:

Great thing! I’m looking forward for the DVD, I had the chance to see it on some (…) filmfest in Istanbul. Definitly worth watching though personally I was disappointed with Charles Burns’ work (maybe because of high expectations, I adore Black Hole – is the movie still going to be realized btw?). But I loved Lorenzo Mattotti & Richard McGuire.

When I first watched this film I was utterly gob-smacked by the concept of fear it covers in fantastic and symbolic animations. Children are scared of the dark, but so are many adults… I guess the dark in the context of the film refers to many things, not just the absence of light. For example a quote from a famous psychiatrist, “we all fear the darkness within our selves”. The unknown and the fear of man/insanity is very strong throughout this animation. If you haven't seen it I recommend you do.. learn French while you're at it, and afterwards show this to your friends and family. This film doesn't have the publicity it deserves.
