Pigtale

pigtale

Ovi Nedelcu’s lines are so vivid and cinematic, one expects them to leap off the page. Questioned about his frenetic, flowing style, Ovi admitted he does everything with a ball-point pen.

His first comic, Pigtale, is the story of Boston Booth, a down-on-his-luck detective who uncovers a suspicious animal conspiracy when he discovers a talking pig. The first issue was released by Image in January to glowing reviews, and the second came out just last week. With his unique style and fans as high up as Ronnie Del Carmen and Brad Bird, Pigtale seems to have everything going for it.

This is the first comic in pamphlet form I’ve purchased since before I had armpit-hair. Check it out yourself – Ovi has posted five-page previews from each issue on his site.

Looks really great (I’d have to read it to see if the story’s half decent). But if this is honestly the only comic book you’ve picked up in years, I’m afraid you’re really missing out. I’ve seen a lot better than this recently. Digital lettering… sheesh!

i meant the only pamphlet comic. i read all sorts of graphic novels and compilations (of pamphlets). the lettering is a bit naff, which is sad, because it often disrupts the pages.

the story so far is good; much better than most mainstream offerings, imo.

Just teasing, Matt. You did specify “in paphlet form”… I just went a little ‘team comics’ on you. Represent! Ahem… anyway… Pigtale looks really good, and I can’t wait to pick up a copy. Bird and Del Carmen ought to know what they’re talking about.

Finally someone that proves you don’t have to use $100 brushes or $50 pens to make comics.
