Realphotoism and Bert Monroy

Bert Monroy is a digital photo-realist. The image above (of Chicago’s Damen Station) was produced entirely in illustrator and photoshop. Here’s a photo of Damen Stn:

I think I got that right…

Incredible talent and skill. And for those of you like me that asks “Why not just take a photo?” he explaines on his site

    Creating What You See!
As a photo-realist painter, I have often been asked why I don’t just take a photograph.Good question, when you consider my paintings look like photographs. Well, for one thing, I’m not a photographer. To me, it is not the destination that is important—it is the journey.
The incredible challenge of recreating reality is my motivation. — Bert Monroy

Print This Post [...]

I understand his explaination for not just taking a photo, but isn’t he working from a photo anyway? I don’t think his doing photo-realistic landscape painting from his laptop. Regardless, his work is pretty amazing. It’d be interesting to see how his technique would work in rendering more surreal scenes, ala Chris Van Allsburg.

I guess the journey is a gag, but I’m sure that someone somewhere thought that the purpose of making a work of art (picture, writing, music, cookery…) was to show something new, a unique point of view, not to copy what a machine can record. Its not recreating reality, its recreating what a photograph does. The artist should switch off the computer, use his own eyes, and sit and draw AT the station and respond. 2 out of 10. See me!

    Noddy,

If you’d like to get into a discussion of “What is art?” then you are in for a long drawn out battle. I tend to agree with you, but how can you attack someone for doing what they love to do. If someone out there wants to buy this type of “art” then all is good. If this leads to other commissions that have different specs, then it is good promo work. If he enjoys it and no one buys it and he still does it, then it’s a great hobby. I remember a Peanuts cartoon where snoopy is skating on the frozen pond having a great time. Lucy comes buy and says somthing like “Stupid beagle. Dogs don’t skate.” In the final frame, Snoopy is just standing there thinking to himself, “I thought I was just having fun.”

  • Wow

This is pretty amazing. The “is it art” rants are usually started by morons. You could never accomplish something like this, and the jealousy chews you up.

Btw, the blue line was shut down last weekend, but just for 2 days or so.

I did’nt realise that being questioning and critical made you a moron. I happen to take art seriously and like to talk. Whats your excuse for being a moron??

Jan, I think the French Connection was filmed along the Green Line which is further South than the Blue or Brown lines. It runs above Lake St. Either there or in the Loop itself. The station design would be the same, though.
