Royal Lodger

dzama

Marcel Dzama is a founding member of the now quite famous Royal Art Lodge. This Canadian Prairie gang is in the midst of touring an exhibition of work… looks like they’re currently showing in Dublin. You’re not supposed to have a favourite Lodge member, they all collaborate, and all Lodge work is attributed to all members. But Marcel is my favourite, so there. He’s got more pictures to look at here and here. I particularly like the trees with legs sticking out.

I remember seeing Dzama’s stuff in the Manitoban (the University of Mantioba’s newspaper) and I used to think, “what the f**k?” I just didn’t get it. Then I saw an exhibition of his work at the Plug-In Gallery, and I was floored by his stuff. Seeing his work up close must have done it for me. He uses root beer!
Oh yeah…look for his work on the cover of the new Beck album.

Marcel is one of the topics being debated/tossed around on the ispot.com today, the most recent post under ‘what’s up’. What they’re up in arms about is Beck’s new cd, with Dzama’s work gracing the cover. Hilarious to read through… Everyone disecting whether or not he is a faux naive/pure naive emerging fine artist or illustrator without skill. Granted, it’s not his best work, but it is interesting that his work causes such alarm.

Haven’t seen the new Beck CD… news to me Dzama’s doing the cover art. Good match, though. Have you seen Beck’s own artwork? He had a show in Los Angeles a few years back that I caught… pretty purposefully ‘naive’ stuff. I kinda liked it.

everything less than a photograph is ‘naive’ to some degree. this stuff is beautiful, however they classify it.

  • Mahem the Destroyer

A woman getting oral from a bunny. OK, Now is that done for erotic reasons, or is it done because it will conciously be shocking to some people, or..? So when you sit down to draw does an artist just stream of conciousness let it flow. This is where I might have an issue with the work, if it is indeed something the artist is commited to or not. I’m kinda lukewarm on him. Def. fine arts material some pieces work for me better than others. I like the dark intentions ala
Edward Gorey. Thanks for sharing the info.

    new music round up

I can’t write reviews but I just want to write some thoughts about some recently acquired albums.

Kaiser Chiefs – Employment: At first listen I thought it was just okay. I really like some of the songs but most of them …not so much. I kept hear…
