Run Wrake’s Rabbit

rabbit.jpg

I first saw Run Wrake‘s animated short Rabbit at the Ottawa Animation Festival back in September, and I’m thrilled to see it surface online, as it was definitely one of the most memorable (and bizarre) pieces of animation I saw during the festival.

Watch the short here (Quicktime, hosted by Motionographer).

I can guarantee that you’ve never seen anything quite like it. Don’t let this still from the beginning of the seemingly-innocuous little film fool you — your senses are in for a feast.

(Thanks Eric, for the find!)

While browsing a couple of days ago, I ran upon Rabbit. It is a strange beauty. A fantasy melded into a kind of horrific view of reality. I was a little kid in the 40′s and the Dick and Jane art here brings back memories and, then, turns them upside down and inside out.

Thanks for posting Run Wrake’s little masterpiece here.

O.K., at first I thought, cool, this will be fun for my Grade Ones to see, and then… the knife came out… on second thought I will have to enjoy this myself! Awesome graphics and fascinating animation!

Just because something is innovative, it doesn’t mean it should be applauded no matter how crap the story is. not to mention the sloppy animation and overall amateur production values. and if you want to see a creepy and cool film, see “Spooky Doll Kids”. Just proves you don’t have to turn something innocent into horrific, to be cool/dark. and “Spooky Doll Kids” it’s a first time film too.

thank god someone said something. I HATE this film. I’m disappointed and appalled it’s on this site. just because it’s using an innocnet style totally different, does not make it adult-cool.

To each his own. Sure, the animation is somewhat limited and using vintage children’s reader illustrations is not exactly groundbreaking, but it’s the overall ominous tone of the short film that is worth a second look. And when you see “Rabbit” in a theater up on a big screen, it packs more of a punch than on a small window in your computer.

And pea, if you’re going to use this post’s comments to do some shameless promotion I wouldn’t start off by ripping on a film about “sloppy animation” and “amateur production values.” Poor move.

I can’t believe how negative people can be.
You can appreciate art & things without personally liking the taste.
    (Whatever.)

    I thought this was cool.

It isn’t often that someone can say,
“you’ve never seen anything quite like it.”
    and then it be true.

nothing wrong with a passionate animator Ward. I guess we all put our work out there to be viewed and judged. Got to take the negative comments it helps us to be better with our next films.

My mistake to use harsh negative words, I didn’t mean to come across as bagging out the film-maker. I think its great that the maker completed a film beginning to end. But I’m entitled to criticize it if I found it’s style offensive. And I was not plugging anything, just backing up my view with solid personal work so i wasn’t like one of those empty cans making loud noise. Poor Conclusion Ward.

I know shameless promotion when I see it — and I’ve been in the biz for 10 years, so I’ve seen it all.

It’s nice to be proud about the work that you do, roseline, but you come across a wee bit arrogant — especially when you were ripping on a film that has already won many prestigious awards. Honestly? It was tacky.

A bit of hypocracy dropping in that “10 yr experience” self promotion, and continuing to rip on me. You sound a wee bit arrogant too Mr Ward Jenkins. I already pointed out I admit my mistake for the initial impulsive, harsh comment. I still find the style disheartening. It doesnt matter what it’s won.

Okay, so what gives? Explain to me why “rosencrantz”, “pea”, and “Kim” all share the same IP address.

Okay Tim and Roseline, let me be honest with you — I appreciate your excitement and enthusiasm for creating your first animated film. That deserves praise in and of itself. But I stand behind my initial comment about Roseline’s opinionated comment under the guise of shameless promotion. I still feel that was tacky. And for me to tell you this shocking bit of info is not “bullying,” but rather my opinon on the matter, and one that is shared by many who have blogs (including this one). Comments that are utililzed for promotion are plain rude. What happens is that you disrupt the flow of conversation, point blank. Hey — promote the hell out of your film on your own blog, YouTube, whathaveyou. You’re already getting a good amount of interest, so why feel the need to do so here? (And I’m fully aware that others are going to check out your film now from me mentioning it, so you can thank me later for this.)

Just let the film speak for itself. That’s all I’m going to say.

If this conversation continues without a resolution in sight, I will talk with Johnny about freezing the comments on this post. It’s getting pretty ridiculous, especially when you post under peusdonyms.

This is a nice piece of art and the picture-book style is a necessary part of it. It’s about human language and how language makes us see the world in a certain way. Because of language we are superior to other beings, we can change the world and rule it. And we can pass that knowledge to our children by teaching them our language, e.g. with picture-books. Without language there would be no culture.

But there’s also a dark side which we don’t always see. Because language can control how we see the world, we can be deluded or manipulated, even towards inhumanity and selfdestruction. When we call some plants “bad weeds” we want to get rid of them. Jews were called “subhuman beings” and killed. We might even destroy our planet because language prevents us from seeing the risk.

This is the simple message of the movie, but there are some finer details. There is that “quill+ink=pet set” subplot. And did you notice that when the jewels turn back into insects they are not named?
There are many details and ideas in this movie that make it worth to watch it again and to think about it.

I had nothing to do with roseline’s film at all. Rose and I watched this film together at work and it annoyed the shit out of us that we fet compelled to write something. (this is the last time i want to write this stuff ward. If you could stick to the film in question that would be nice. Rose did after writing her comment email this site to have it removed)

Ok what i dont like, the fact that is is labeled “ANIMATION” when this is not animation. Since southpark came out this style of (lackof)animation is continually being praised. It should stop. IT looks awful and it is an insult.

The design of this film was also bad. They took the goldernbooks style and bastardised it and not very well. It’s over cluttered the motion tracked text is awful.

The message behind the story isnt bad (you pointed out some interesting things noribori). My main complaint is with this film is in the delivery.

There’s a few films I’ve seen recently that I think handle a deeper message better. The first being that kiwi one (that is featured here) the second is this film i stumbled across is this beautiful film called “snobo” http://www.verabee.com/animation.html

Like I’m mentioning the above films is what Rose wished to do. She really didnt like the disturbing nature that this ‘rabbit’ film presented and wanted to show an alternative. You read her intention really wrong Ward.

You said it yourself, and I know, my film has had plenty of attention, I have no interest to promote it after all the film festivals and youtube. I definately would not promote it on a comment system for another film. The idea of that, is indeed tacky and it would not be thought up by someone like me with my work, the idea came from your head. and you very rudely stuck it on me.

I am honestly saying, an opinionated comment was all I intended, and I felt my film showed what i meant by not having to use disturbing material to have be dark and cool.

I emailed Johnny myself that same afternoon after posting my comment, after i calmed down about “rabbit”, i realised immediately how wrongly my comment sounded. I apologised and asked for my comment to be deleted or let me edit it at least. and i tried to take my blog address off. and this was before you started having a go at me. now how would that be self promotion if i wanted my comment off before anyone could read it?
all i wanted was to show unsupport for the rabbit film. I got fired up about a rabbit being killed and the golden book style being used grossly. and that’s what made me write what i did, and yes, maybe a little arrogantly. it was nothing to do with self promoting AT ALL.

And as for the ip addresses, like Tim said, we all viewed it at work, same network.

You’re the one who started this whole ridiculous thing by labelling me as tacky and judging me wrongly as self promoting to the whole public.
this is the last time I am going to write here also. let this be the end of it.
