Searle’s Secret Sketchbook

secretsearle.jpg

Mark Kennedy has posted some great scans from a reproduction of a Ronald Searle sketchbook drawn while Searle was in the red light districts of Hamburg, Germany, circa 1969. Titled, The Secret Sketchbook, the drawings showcase Searle’s expertise of capturing the moment as it happens, even in limited light and surrounded by subjects who probably wouldn’t take it too kindly if they knew that some dude was drawing them. If you like to see more of what Mark has posted, be sure to let him know. The more we see of Searle’s work, the better.

It’s great seeing Searle’s work here. His line work is so impressive. The images from the Secret Sketchbook are absolutely fantastic. Thanks for the post.

I just found out that Searle was a big influence on Matt Groening (of Simpsons fame). There’s a good article on him from the BBC at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/desertislanddiscs_20050710.shtml

Wonderful timing, Ward — Coincidentally, I’ve been turning to Searle for a lot of inspiration this week, and was thinking of writing a post myself. I didn’t know this book existed!
