Seth does X-Men?

Okay, well not quite. The organizers of the Doug Wright Awards for Canadian Cartooning are auctioning a one-of-a-kind piece of original art by Seth to help raise funds for the 2006 Awards. The 16″ x 22″ illustration features the original 1960s X-Men attending a comic con. The auction goes live April 17th on ebay.

There’s actually a lesser known image of Seth having drawn and painted not only the X-Men but a number of other early Marvel superheroes for the Eyewater mini-comic, “Coober Skeeber.” If you’d like a scan, I’d be happy to provide one. Either that or contact Tom Devlin if you know who he is.

It was pub by Highwater Comics actually…and i’m pretty sure it was less impressive (or at least accomplished) than this one. It looked kind of scethbook quality i think.

Why do I think Seth and Maurice Villekoop are the same person?

And if they are, why does everyone seem to go along with the gag?

i have seen them in the same room together at the same time, so they’re def
not the same person – but they are good friends.

and yes – they are both great images…but the one we got him to do for the auction is OUTSTANDING. we all expected something cool, like the Coober Skeber cover, and were hogswalloped when we saw the result. it;s two feet wide, a completed watercolour, with a shiny bronze and silver border. he even went and got the name of it engraved on a plaque! wot a guy!
seth very rarely (if ever) sells original artwork, so i strongly urge you to place a bid. (plus it’s for a swell non-profit cause to boot.)

I got to see the cover to “Coober Skeeber” in person, as I not only had work in the comic, but Tom Devlin, publisher of Highwater, was a co-worker at the time. It was a gorgeous piece. Seth was more than kind enough to do it for Tom but he was quite strict about getting the cover back. Seth’s dry brush technique alone was worth the price of admission.

Having met Chris Oliveros on many occasions, I tried to convince him to ask Seth do do some kind of superhero(trademark pending) strip of his creations. For those being blessed, pick up Comic Art magazine # 6, a true gem. It has Seth stuff with a motley of superheroes(trademark pending) drawn by him. By the way heard that the magazine is coming back in August 2006, it is a real treat. Ask your local comic shop owners about it. You might get a blank stare, but the magazine is worth every dime.

I always thought Seth WAS one of the X-men:
    ~Unusual costume and gloves
    ~Identity-disguising glasses
~Uncanny mutant ability to invivincibly swing a perfect brushstroke every time
~Knack for dropping to his knees and bellowing “Jeeeaaannnn! NOOOOOOO!”
