Sketch Swap is a fun little online toy that allows you to draw a sketch, and submit it to get someone else’s sketch in return. This little octopus alien fella is what I got.
The site’s Terms of Service say that they check out all the submissions, and it might be a more compelling site if they started compliing a gallery of some of the interesting submissions.
As it is, other than being sort of fun (for awhile) to draw there, I sort of lost interest. You just know there are some interesting drawings there, but you can only see random ones, and it’s too easy for people to submit lame drawings. The dynamic is such that if you want to see a lot of drawings, you need to submit a lot, so the dynamic’s skewed toward not spending much time on the drawing.
But they say they’re planning on evolving the site, so I’ll check back. The basic idea is cool!

Wow, the URL to my SketchSwap drawings (and what I got in return) got garbled. Maybe because th URL was long.
Yowza! My buddy Mark posted a link to my sketches on Boing Boing and before long I received a wonderful email from SketchSwap co-founder Philipp Lenssen, sending me 15 excellent drawings that they’ve received from OVER 50,000 submissions in just their first week up!
Philipp said that they’re going to begin screening to choose better drawngs to send back out. These show that they’re getting some excellent ones! I think there needs to be a gallery of interesting ones. It’s a challenge to draw in such a constrained manner, so it’s amazing to see how excellent some of these look.

You can sketch a doodle and then when you can swap your sketch with a random someone else who’s created a sketch. I submitted about an hours worth of doodles, what follows are the only ones I remembered to save. [...]

another website with the sketch concept, by the fabulous yongfook:
this came out quite a while ago … it doesn’t involve swapping, so you can see galleries of submissions. anyone can submit sketches (with registration).
everything from penises to portraits at your fingertips…

I was disappointed when I discovered that they have to approve the drawings first… I can understand why, but at the same time I really liked the idea that I would be literally swapping with the person whose drawing I saw, because then I’d have some idea of the aesthetic of the person I was swapping with and whether they’d appreciate mine.
