If you’re looking to breaking into the great vast world of illustration, sometimes it’s best to get a good grip on the scene from illustrators themselves, rather than from some stuff-shirt manual or guide that you can buy at your local bookstore. Drawn’s own Scott Thigpen has accumulated a great list of reference geared to help the newbie illustrator on his Artsy Fartsy Blog, offering such nuggets of wisdom as 10 ways to land an agent, 10 ways to promote yourself, and, more importantly, 10 ways to handle bad clients. He even offers an Adobe Illustrator tutorial. The list is on his blog over in the right column, listed under “Art Reference.”
Other artists out there offering help and guidance are Keri Smith who has a nice list of books and reference on creating and being an artist/illustrator. At the bottom of the page, Keri lists some of her own wisdom learned with How To Start as an Illustrator, Seven Steps to Getting Published and a Job Acceptance Checklist. And Jay Montgomery has a page showcasing his process, which is always interesting to check out. Good luck.
