Staake’s Struwwelpeter

Bob Staake is releasing a version of the classic German children’s book Der Struwwelpeter in his familiar geometric style. Der Struwwelpeter is a series of short morality tales. Staake’s version “is intended to remain faithful to (Heinrich) Hoffmann’s original vision while giving the ten bizarre, “lesson-driven” stories a modernized viability.”

I saw an old print of this at a flea market in berlin once, and had the realization that edward scissorhands was undoubtedly inspired by this story. In the copy I found, the kid has wild black hair, very similar to depp’s in the tim burton film. Just some hypothetical trivia for y’ noggin.

    Awesome.
I still remember, “The girl who always looked up” (she ends up walking off a plank.) and the boy who never looked up. (guess.)

    Looks interesting!

But, nothing is as good as the original.
I have two copies, one from the 1920′s that is hand-colored
and the original drawings by Heinrich Hoffmann cannot be improved upon.

I had heard of this book and looked at the editions available on Amazon.com. This new Fantagraphics version by Staake is unlike anything I expected — It is GORGEOUS!! I don’t know how he creates his art (I am assuming he does so in Illustrator), but this version is hugely better than the original. Still I have to wonder if Staake means for this book to be read by adults or kids or both because the art is so creepy (but very very beautiful). i LOVVVVVVVE it!!!!

Interestingly enough, he does it all in a single layer in Photoshop 3.0. Or so he says…
