Stan Berenstain dead

While there are no official press releases yet, it’s being reported that Stan Berenstain, who along with his wife Jan created the Berenstain Bears, has passed away today. The Berenstain Bears, along with the previously-mentioned Richard Scarry, were staples of my childhood reading. He will be sadly missed.

UPDATE:CNN has the story now.

The Berenstains were a great team, and did wonderful books. They were among my favorites too(along with millions of other kids)…so I was shocked when a tome that came out around 1995–a sort of excyclopedia of children’s authors and illustrators–contained a pretty snarky, dismissive entry putting down their work presumably because they were too “cartoony”(and as we all know “cartoons=schlock”, right?). feh!

Anyway, many many thanks for the fun and memories, Stan.

Men like Stan Berenstain bring the world so much, and he will, in deed be greatly missed. I read the books as a child, and today my children watch the show on PBS , its entertaining for them, and comforting for me to know that some of the sweet humourt and good values of children’s writers and illustrators are not forever gone… I’m happy to know that his legacy goes on, and that i am not alone fighting the Power Rangers, Because Bother, Sister, Mother and papa Bearenstain are by my side!!!!ever gratefull for that

This is sad. I have between 30-40 of their books (including some old adult humor paperbacks) and love everything they do.

They will be missed in my household.

He did great work, the early books are the best. The commercial stuff lacked the edge the early work had. Some of those books are hard to find, if you run into them pick one up. I recommend “The Bear’s Vacation” and “The Bike Lesson”. The art just grabs you. You will find them in seconh hand shops, not in regular book stores.
